Redesign SpSh Home 2009 Overview

STOP
Please...

  • No more working on design aspects for designs that don't meet the goals. Read old notes carefully before diving in.
  • No More using images that we're not going to really want on the site in the end.
  • No more just showing up with new designs. Help narrow work that has already been done, or explain why you are going to make changes, and see if people agree with your ideas before spending time designing.

Do It Yourself Carbon Offsets

When I first heard of carbon offsets, I loved the idea: a very committed, thoughtful person used them to reduce her guilt about the impacts she couldn't change. Since then they've been drifting into the old paradigms that got us into this mess, "Carbon Indulgences" letting us sin. Even at their best, they work like this: a windmill farm creates some electricity. They sell the electricity to someone who says, yeah! I'm using wind power!

How to organize the tips?

I know I want it very easy to find airport tips, with a single link from a SpaceShare site pulling up tips for the appropriate airport.

How do I integrate that with all the possible tips for travelers, and also for planners, of all kinds of topics?

Graphics to Inspire Earth-Consciousness

Help us improve and share the skit (currently) at http://greeneventsguide.org/skit.html
(grab it at: http://greeneventsguide.org/skit_basic.txt )

This project's first version is approaching completion. Brainstorms and sketches below are OUT OF DATE.

Preparing for Festival Re-Localization and Neighbor Match Presentation

These are the very earliest notes on a presentation for the Whole Earth Festival, hopefully to be repeated at other festivals, helping "relocalize" the large events by getting people to connect with neighbors interested in the same types of solutionism.

Looking for someone to work with Stephen to re-create this presentation and help give it!

Section 1: Introduce SpaceShare, how we green festivals, and this low-tech version of it.

Section 2: Lots of volunteers needed, get everyone to move into a map of Davis, Bay Area, and beyond.

Section 3A: Neighhborhood improvements.

Facebook and MySpace

I've thought about MySpace and Facebook. I've been worried about the time it would take... how much can anyone do besides me? who will see it who doesn't find our homepage? I've wondered without knowing whether these communities would attract new attention that our homepage doesn't... it seems generally more logical to have a discussion on our website, rather than one here and one there, but I might be wrong. The other question is: why do we want to reach students? Our main targets are festival and conference organizers, who then reach students... as SpaceShare grows the potential to spend all day chatting with interested folks who aren't really helping is a danger. Could MySpace and Facebook help us recruit interns? When we're ready to build college carpool systems, could they help us mobilize that? Could we get volunteers for festivals?

Carbon Calculators

Collecting information about Carbon Calculators:

Likely:

  • Drive Neutral, yearly car trips calculator: https://www.driveneutral.org/calculator/friends?=spaceshare
  • Nice broad tool at Carbon Neutral: http://www.carbonneutral.com///calculators/index_shop_calculator.asp?referredby=spaceshare
  • Inconvenient Truth, vague: http://www.climatecrisis.net/takeaction/carboncalculator/

* We're begining to work with Drive Neutral https://www.driveneutral.org/friends?=spaceshare who are working on a conference carbon calculator that will do the whole thing. From them, I can get the rest of the details soon, but the online calculator isn't launched yet. I can probably put this on our website in another month or so, maybe sooner. I can get you their estimates for how to calculate your conference's impact by hand (somewhat complex to really determine what should be counted), as well as for travelers. I'm talking with them - if you tell me more specifically what you're looking for, I can try to make it happen.

SpaceShare and Stephen's Web Designs

SpaceShare:

Green Consumer Library

NRDC: A Shopper's Guide to Home Tissue Products
Comparison of toilet paper and such by green standards.
* This would be good to put in the newsletter; they recommend it for religious community newsletters.

share all the sharing websites - group research project

Let's create a directory of the "Peak Sharing" movement... all the new places where sharing is happening. (Great early-intern or volunteer project... 8 hours total of interesting google research would be great.)

* Has anyone beat us to this?

Quick start (we'll add descriptions and categorize):
All the rideshare sites:
a- event
b- place to place
c- commute (or someone else's index of these?)
All the carshare (flexcar, city car share) sites
Couchsurf and similar homestay sites
Freecycle

Non-internet or articles to be written:
Burning Man's Gift Economy
Some intro to the open source movement
