Green guide for event organizers

Overview of Greening for Event Organizers

This list aims to guide you to broad areas you'll want to consider:

  1. Create a green mission statement and let people know in advance that you are planning a green event. Have someone or everyone assigned to think about greening.
  2. Consider attendees travel to your event, one of the most energy intensive aspects of many events.
    • Make public transportation directions available to attendees.
    • Have spaceshare.com set up a carpool system for your event, or help people share shuttles or taxis from airports.
    • Offer information on environmentally friendly places to stay and eat. (links: organictravel.com;http://www.happycow.net/vegetarian_diet.html)
  3. Reduce waste at your event. Be sure recycling bins are widely available and easy to locate.
  4. Provide food that tends towards locally grown, organic, fair-trade and vegetarian.
  5. Purchase items in bulk to minimize packaging waste.
  6. Make arrangements to donate left over food to a food bank or shelter. (link to foodbank Web site)
