Festival Volunteer Guidelines

If you're going to a festival anyway, volunteering with SpaceShare's booth for even an hour is a great way to help us and become part of SpaceShare's community without losing much music time. (Want to be a festival team leader?)

We often have 1-4 free tickets for core volunteers. If you're one of those volunteers, you make the difference in creating a well-running booth that's fun for everyone:

* You get a free ticket, perhaps some help with travel or a free meal.
* Volunteer for a minimum of 4 hours each day, typically two two-hour shifts, where you are fully engaged with running the booth. Be prepared to be part of a team taking responsibility for any unplanned challenges that come up.
* And please, communicate and don't make us track you down -- don't just disappear and show up from time to time, you're an important part of the team. Also, be able to balance being amidst a party scene with being clean, sober and awake at the booth!
* Commit clearly, and don't commit to more than you can handle.
* Getting the booth off to a good start is often the main key to a successful and stress-free weekend: be there on time, especially the first day, and it's usually all downhill from there!

Typical Festival: Juice Sponsorship

Our booth is typically a mix of talking about carpooling/green topics, running a rideboard, and doing something related to our sponsor. As of 2007/2008, Columbia Gorge Organic Juice is the main sponsor -- we hand out small samples of juice, then talk about our mission. It's often more fun, since people tend to smile as they get free stuff. You can help tremendously by being friendly and outspoken, inviting people to sample the juice, rather than just waiting.

If this doesn't sound perfect, speak up and describe what would work for you as volunteer guidelines: we've done things like split a free ticket and each person does a half-shift. When everyone does there part, we do amazing things in the world and have a lot of fun, just please realize that a commitment is needed if you're one of the core volunteers.

Typical Saturday Booth Schedule, 10am-8pm:

9:30-12 = 1 person (most of these events, mornings are slow)
12-6 = 2 people
6-8+ = 1 person, perhaps 30 minutes of help at end.
Plus: 2 hours total of visiting other booths, dealing with stage announcements, etc.
==============
total ~= 19 hours for 4 people

* It's good to have occasional check-ins during the solo times in case things get crazy. If it starts to rain or get windy, everyone should check on the booth!

** Having an un-rushed set-up, ideally with everyone present, is usually the first step towards having a great event.
