Student funding opportunity - sustainable remediation

*********************************************

Malcolm Pirnie, Inc., an environmental engineering consulting firm located in Emeryville, CA, is offering an Innovative Applied Research grant (up to $5,000) to a graduate student researcher to develop spreadsheet tools that encourage and quantify sustainable site remediation.

Description: The student would work with Malcolm Pirnie staff to construct a spreadsheet model to quantify the impact (e.g., energy usage, water usage, carbon emissions) of several soil and groundwater remediation technologies and suggest ways of making the remedy more sustainable. The student would conduct research, generate a spreadsheet model, write a memorandum documenting the model, analyze data and develop recommendations for several sites as case studies. Results would be summarized as a publication and/or presentation at a professional conference.

Malcolm Pirnie would provide guidance and direction to the student, share relevant data and experiences, conference proceedings, etc. Malcolm Pirnie staff would co-author publications or presentations, and use the model after the project was completed. Work could be performed in Malcolm Pirnie's Emeryville, CA office or independently. The project must be completed by December 31, 2008.

Applicants: Please send a cover letter, resume and writing sample to Elisabeth Hawley at ehawley@pirnie.com. In the cover letter, please briefly indicate your academic background, future career plan or potential directions, nature of interest in the project topic and availability (hours per week) for the project over the next six months. Applications are due July 15, 2008.
